Car towed?

Cars, trucks, SUVs, vans and motorcycles. Find out who has it, what they can legally charge, and whether the tow broke the rules.

Who towed your car?

Parked on a street, or police were involved

Call the police non-emergency line. Police tows go to a contracted or rotation tow company, and police can tell you which one.

Towed from an apartment, store, or private lot

Read the tow-away sign at the lot entrance. It usually shows the tow company's name and phone number. In most states the company must also report the tow to police, so police can tell you where the car went.

Not sure it was towed

Call the police non-emergency line and give your plate number. If there is no record of a tow, report the car as possibly stolen.

Why trust this site

City and police pages usually cover only their own impound lot. Most disputes are about private tows from apartments and stores, and those rules are scattered across state law, county ordinances and rate schedules.

We put them in one place, in plain English, and link every rule and rate to the official source it came from. Each page shows when we last checked it.
