What to photograph and write down

1. Photograph where you were parked, including the curb, lines and nearby signs.

   Shows whether you were in a marked or reserved space.

2. Photograph every tow-away sign at the property entrance, or the entrance with no sign.

   Most states require a posted sign before a private tow.

3. Write down what each sign says: tow company, phone number, and where cars are taken.

   Missing details on a sign can make the tow improper.

4. Note when you parked, when you found the car gone, and when you called.

   Times prove when the tow happened and how long storage ran.

5. Photograph the rate sheet posted at the storage lot.

   Lots must charge what they post, and often must post it.

6. Write down which payment types the lot accepts, and who told you.

   Many states require lots to take more than cash.

7. Get an itemized receipt and photograph both sides.

   Each charge can be checked against the legal maximum.

8. Before you leave the lot, photograph all four sides of the car, the wheels and the interior.

   Damage noted at pickup is much easier to claim.

9. Note the lot's address so you can measure the distance from where you were towed.

   Many states limit how far a car can be taken.

10. Write down the names of the people you spoke to and what they said.

    Useful for complaints, chargebacks and small claims.
